Information Search Strategies on the Internet day 3

Information Search Strategies on the Internet: A Critical Component of New Literacies
Laurie A. Henry
University of Connecticut, Connecticut, U.S.A. Received March 31, 2005; Accepted April 22, 2005

This was a study that looked at teachers competency and comfort-level with navigating the Internet. Teachers were asked to fill out a survey and run through some search scenarios. There were a number of conclusions. Most importantly it the distinct differences of reading skills online verse in a book. Books tend to be better organized and linear whereas online is non-linear. So, a different and really higher literacy is required with higher order thinking skills that would allow student to sift through all the overwhelming amount of information and then synthesis it into a usable result. Teachers seemed a little intimidated by technology and recognized not only a divide between them and other students but a divide between other students.

So, the bottom line is that schools need to address online literacy, and problem-solving skills in school so that students can successfully conduct research on the Internet. Also, schools need to help teachers obtain the necessary skills to approach the Internet with competency and confidence. Finally, more research is needed in the area of navigating the Internet related to pedagogy.

Search strategies on the internet are not items students take into consideration. They think it will be easy, just type in a word and up comes the information they need. Since this is not the case, stuents and teachers both need to be trained in how to search on the internet.
